Humans have been storing information on different objects for millennia, but the digital age has brought about greater comfort in the storage and retrieval of data. This ease of data handling made it easier to disseminate information. The growth of the Internet and social media has tempted people to share information on a larger scale, resulting in uncontrolled sharing of information. This should be a concern for individuals and corporations who are insufficiently concerned about security of their data.

This course explores the difference between data and information, how data is stored and retrieved in different media, the good and bad sides of uncontrolled dissemination of information, and the safeguards to keep personal and corporate data secure.

Learning Objectives
  • Explore the basic concepts of data and information
  • Explore how data is stored, transmitted and shared
  • Recognize how the information age, the Internet and social media influence data and information security

Good explanation of differences between data and information, how data is stored and retrieved in different media. Nice tips about data dissemination and data safeguards. Good explanation about how data was stored, transmitted and shared earlier, and how we do it now.

Instructor is soft of speech, which makes him difficult to hear at times. In "Interacting with Internet and Social Media" he makes a somewhat outdated comment conflating web browser security and antivirus.

This course had some good information about information history. I would have liked more information about keeping information secure - maybe just expanded the "tips" section.

This course focuses mostly on history and only gives a few, outdated, common sense recommendations at the very end. Presenter is extremely monotone. Slides are also boring.

This is incredibly basic information that has very little use in the corporate world. It was essentially just a short history session.
