In this course Excel expert David Ringstrom, CPA, points out some of the nuances and best practices of working with large workbooks and worksheets in Microsoft Excel. You learn how to monitor and navigate to key cells and locations by way of the little-used Watch Window feature. The INDIRECT function will save you from manually editing formulas that reference a stack of worksheets, while Custom Views empower you to hide and unhide swaths of worksheets with ease. The course closes with pointers on how to improve calculation performance and pare down the file size of large workbooks.

Topics covered:

  • Use the Watch window to easily monitor the ramifications of even minor changes to your workbooks.
  • Learn the power--and the risks--of grouping worksheets.
  • Use Excel's Custom Views feature to hide and unhide multiple worksheets with ease.
  • Learn tricks to simplify printing information from large workbooks or worksheets.
  • Save time when aggregating data from multiple worksheets with Excel's INDIRECT function.
  • Learn techniques that let you reduce the file size of bloated Excel workbooks.

This course will make you even more of an Excel wizard and enable you to apply your skills to large workbooks and worksheets which others might not be able to deal with.

Learning Objectives
  • Discover how to use the Watch Window feature to audit key formulas and navigate spreadsheets easily.
  • Discover how to use the Custom Views feature to transform how you print and manage large workbooks.

I've taken several excel courses from David Ringstrom and they are always informative. In this one, I was hoping to be able to use the slides as a reference, but they are just too busy to follow compared with earlier courses. Still good material, though.

I really liked the section on "Watch". I've used Excel since the first version, and never used Watch. This will be a big time saver. I agree about the possibility of Grouping errors - you may want to remind students about autorecover..

This is a great course. I am a heavy user of excel but there are a lot of tips that I learned from this course. David was great in explaining each topic by providing examples that were easy to follow.

I have had a lot of trouble reporting results of large spreadsheets spawned by consolidated accounting and especially found the printing large worksheets section to be very useful.

Good tips for auditing/printing large spreadsheets. Except for the Indirect function, all other tips for me were the first time to know about.
