Description
This course explores the board practices and leadership roles that cultivate a more effective and more engaged Board of Directors. Many organizations have a Board of Directors appointed by a group of stakeholders to represent the collective or specific interests; however, a common challenge is making the Board of Directors an asset of the organization and not extra expense. A highly effective Board of Directors can be another point of competitive advantage for an organization to help it stand out amongst its peers.
In this course, you learn about four co-operative board leadership roles shared among the executives and the directors that lead to governance excellence. We will apply the four leadership roles in two context that confront all boards – strategic management and risk oversight. These two areas will demonstrate opportunities for management to better engage with their boards to leverage the expertise and experience of the directors. It will also give participants acting in a director capacity, ideas for interacting with management to both fulfill fiduciary responsibilities and contribute insights to guide the direction of the organization.
This course is designed for those responsible for governance:
- For CEO or other executive roles, such as the CFO, with direct accountabilities to the Board of Directors
- For directors who serve of the board of an organization
- For board and committee chairs who have responsibility for facilitating meetings
- For board advisors that are asked to support a Board of Directors
- The principles and practices are as relevant for the boards of small organizations as they are large organizations
WHY IS THIS COURSE IMPORTANT FOR CPAs:
Governance is without a doubt one of the highest value activities that happens in any organization – just consider the time-value of those seated around the boardroom table. Yet sadly, it’s often the one meeting that fails to live up to its full potential. Most Boards of Directors seek out and have one or more CPAs represented – both on the management and the director sides of the table. This course is important so that CPAs come with ideas and frameworks to elevate the level of effectiveness of any organization’s Board of Directors.
