Understanding Health and Safety in an Industrial Environment

$10.00

Category:

Description

In an industrial environment, everyone at work has a responsibility to meet health and safety legislation and regulation, which means to care for your own health and safety as well as others who may be affected by what you do or don’t do.

In essence, this means cooperating with your employer by abiding by any rules or protective equipment provided to carry out your job, moreover, this also means not misusing anything provided for your health, safety, or welfare.

A hazard is anything that may cause harm, like chemical or machinery etc., and a risk is the likelihood that somebody could be harmed. Understanding the difference between a hazard and a risk is essential to complete risk assessment for working environments and activities.

Every work environment must have a series of risk assessments to identify risks and hazards for each process and also for preparation too.

Below you’ll find some examples of specific regulations for particular hazards and how to prevent them.

In terms of electricity, most defects can be found by visual examination, or by testing, referred to as PAT testing (portable appliance testing).

One of the biggest causes of fatalities or major injures in a work environment are due to heights; there should be specific regulations stating where the appropriate equipment and safety procedures are kept and any techniques for using a ladder or machinery safely.

Risks associated with manual handling can be found in all working environments, this refers to lifting, pushing, or carrying heavy goods. It’s important to assess the load and to make sure there isn’t any uneven flooring or any obstacles that can make the process difficult.

It’s important that individuals familiarise themselves with all the health and safety signage in the work environment. Mandatory health and safety signs for wearing eye protection for instance will be round with a white pictogram on a blue background. Most advisory warning signs are triangular with a black picture on a yellow background, drawing your attention to a possible hazard or risk. With regards to dangerous substances, there are nine main groups/classes of them that are internationally recognised worldwide.

If your employer has provided you with any protective equipment to use, you must use it, it will be a disciplinary offence if you don’t. If you notice damaged or unsafe equipment, report it, never use such utilities.

In the case of a fire, there must be procedures for sounding an emergency alarm, to test the alarm for evacuation and escape routes to be used. Notices with green backgrounds around the building portray safe routes out; following procedures allows anyone missing to be quickly identified.

In terms of accident procedures, dealing with the injury or damage is the priority, the blame comes at a later stage and shouldn’t be the initial focus if an incident was to occur.

All workers have a right to work in an environment where risks to their health and safety are properly controlled.
