Description
A hazard is anything that can directly or indirectly cause harm, in any workspace, no matter what industry you’re in. That being said, different industries have different sorts of hazards.
Hazards need to be looked out for in your workspace, these may include dangerous situations that are not isolated, and potentially are following unsafe practices.
Hazards and risk come hand-in-hand; there must be an evaluation of risk conducted to that hazard, calculating the probability of that hazard causing harm.
If you come across a hazard, and you believe it may cause harm, it is essential that you isolate that hazard if you can, and place warnings so others can be vigilant about it, it must be reported to the appropriate person as well, following company policy.
Generally, there are two main types of incidents that can potentially occur in any workplace, a dangerous occurrence, and a hazardous malfunction. It’s essential to distinguish what type of incident is present, as that can help prevent such occurrences from happening again.
Don’t wait for a person to get injured to report a hazard, report any incident or a situation that may have caused harm to an individual, so that steps can be taken to ensure that the risk of it reoccurring and causing injury are minimised if not eliminated.
